Disability Integration Workshop
The Disability Integration program addresses the needs of individuals with access and functional needs including those with disabilities during all phases of the disaster cycle. People with disabilities and others with access and functional needs are disproportionately affected before, during and after disasters. As stated in a report by the National Council on Disability: “Their evacuation, shelter, and recovery experiences differed vastly from the experiences of people without disabilities. People with disabilities were often unable to evacuate because transportation was inaccessible. For example, most evacuation buses did not have wheelchair lifts. Moreover, people with visual and hearing disabilities were unable to obtain necessary information pertinent to their safety because said communication did not comply with federal law.”1 For this reason, the Disability Integration program was initiated and implemented to assure equal access for all clients, disaster workers, and partners to all service delivery and work sites; delivery of our programs and services in the least restrictive setting possible; and effective communications delivered in all appropriate formats for dissemination of information to the whole community.

We will give a short overview presentation of the activity and have time for Q&A! Use the link to join below:

Concept of Operations Basics is a 24 minute, basic level, web-based training that can be viewed as a video in EDGE or via YouTube. Participants are encouraged to take the course in EDGE so that its completion will be reflected on their training transcript.
The YouTube video can be delivered in one of the three following scenarios:
  • When delivered to a large group of participants simultaneously (for example, at regional institutes)
  • When viewed by participants who have no need to track completion (such as partners or those without EDGE accounts)
  • When delivered as just-in-time training (when a worker is about to deploy to a DR or upon arrival on a DR)
When delivered at regional institutes (or other in-person setting), the ILT version can be used. For the ILT version, the course is presented via YouTube, and accompanied by a 30 minute facilitator-led group discussion. Facilitators use the Discussion Job Aid to help guide a group discussion and answer questions.
Although the ILT version is ideal for in-person settings, all participants receive full and equal course credit for either the WBT or ILT.

Home Fire Campaign Education
Limited Capacity seats available

Join us to learn how we have adapted our Home Fire Campaign in this new virtual world! Our Home Fire Campaign aims to reduce death and injuries by home fires by providing families with education on how to prevent home fires, practice their 2-minute fire drill, and talk with them about their current smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Through our Fire Department partners in some communities, we are able to refer those in need of smoke or CO alarms to their local Fire Department to schedule an installation of needed equipment. If unavailable, we will add them to our list of future installations once programming returns to normal. This training sessions will teach you how to conduct fire prevention education over the phone, as well as talk with the family about an additional hazard like winter storms or flooding. We will need dozens of trained Virtual Home Fire Campaign Educators in April during our National Sound the Alarm campaign where we hope to educate 600+ families on how to be safe if a house fire occurs in their home.

Workshop Disaster Assessment
The workshop introduces the tasks and responsibilities of Disaster Assessment responders on a disaster relief operation. A volunteer serving as an SA in Disaster Assessment is responsible for gathering and interpreting information about the extent of damage to homes and communities affected by disaster. They collaborate with caseworkers, and distribute the information promptly to facilitate families receiving assistance. Red Cross has a strong need for volunteers in DA; in fact, this is one of the MA Training Targets for 2021! Because only the online courses are approved at this time, we cannot offer a GAP through this Institute; however, we hope this workshop will encourage you to train in this area.

Audience: Individuals interested in becoming a Red Cross Disaster Assessment worker at a regional or larger disaster relief operation
